In Cross River State, hundreds of carved stone monoliths stand as silent witnesses to a civilization lost to time. Researchers are racing to decode their mysterious inscriptions.

In the dense forests of Cross River State, hundreds of carved stone monoliths stand as silent witnesses to a civilization lost to time. Known locally as the Ikom Monoliths, or Akwanshi, these mysterious stone figures have puzzled archaeologists, intrigued spiritual seekers, and captured the imagination of visitors for generations.

The monoliths vary in size from modest one-meter stones to towering figures reaching three meters in height. Most are carved with elaborate geometric patterns, stylized faces, and what appear to be symbols of authority. Some scholars believe they may be grave markers for important individuals, while others suggest they served as territorial boundary stones or spiritual totems.

"Every time I visit the site, I discover something new," says Dr. Amara Nwosu, who has been studying the monoliths for over a decade. "The carvings are incredibly sophisticated, showing a mastery of stone-working that rivals anything from the same period in Europe or Asia. And yet we know almost nothing about the people who made them."

The most recent research has employed ground-penetrating radar and 3D photogrammetry to document the site with unprecedented precision. These technologies have revealed that the monoliths are arranged in complex patterns that suggest astronomical alignments, similar to those found at Stonehenge and other megalithic sites worldwide.

Carbon dating of organic material found at the base of several monoliths suggests they were erected between 200 and 600 AD, though some archaeologists argue for earlier dates. The civilization that created them appears to have vanished abruptly around the 10th century, possibly due to climate change, warfare, or disease.

The monoliths face significant preservation challenges. Tropical weathering, vandalism, and the gradual encroachment of agriculture threaten the site's integrity. The Cross River State government, with support from UNESCO, has begun fencing the most vulnerable areas and training local communities as site guardians.

For the people of Cross River, the monoliths remain spiritually significant. Annual festivals still take place at the site, where traditional priests perform rituals believed to maintain the connection between the living and the ancestors who erected the stones.
