The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, used his annual festival address to call for national unity and peace amid growing ethnic tensions across the country.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, delivered a powerful message of national unity during his annual festival address, calling on Nigerians to embrace peace and mutual understanding amid growing ethnic tensions across the country.

Speaking to a crowd of over 50,000 worshippers and dignitaries at the Ife Grand Pavilion, the revered traditional ruler emphasized that Nigeria's strength lies in its diversity, not despite it. "We are one people with one destiny," he declared. "The forces that seek to divide us are the same forces that seek to diminish our greatness as a nation."

The annual festival, which celebrates the creation mythology of the Yoruba people, has increasingly become a platform for broader national discourse. This year's attendance included representatives from the Igbo, Hausa, and Fulani communities, as well as delegations from several neighboring countries.

The Ooni's address came just days after a series of ethnic clashes in the Middle Belt region that left over 30 people dead. His call for unity was echoed by religious leaders from across the spectrum, including Islamic scholars, Christian bishops, and traditional priests who shared the platform.

"Traditional institutions have a unique role to play in conflict resolution," said Professor Biko Agozino of the University of Nigeria. "The Ooni speaks with moral authority that transcends politics and ethnicity. His words carry weight precisely because he's not a politician."

The festival also featured cultural displays from various Nigerian ethnic groups, including Hausa horsemen, Igbo masquerades, and Fulani dancers. This deliberate inclusivity was noted by cultural observers as a powerful visual statement of unity.

International diplomats attending the event, including representatives from the United Nations and the African Union, praised the Ooni's message as "exactly what Nigeria needs at this critical juncture." The UN Resident Coordinator announced a new peace-building initiative in partnership with traditional rulers across Nigeria.
