The Vatican has approved the creation of a new Catholic Diocese in Katsina State, expanding the Church presence in Northern Nigeria amid ongoing religious dynamics.
The Vatican has officially approved the creation of the Diocese of Katsina, marking the first new Catholic diocese in Northern Nigeria in over two decades. The announcement, made by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, comes amid complex religious dynamics in the region.
Bishop-elect Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, currently auxiliary bishop of Kaduna, has been appointed as the first bishop of the new diocese. The diocese will be carved out from the existing Diocese of Sokoto and will cover Katsina State and parts of neighboring Zamfara.
The Catholic Church has maintained a presence in Northern Nigeria since the 19th century, though the region is predominantly Muslim. The new diocese will serve approximately 80,000 Catholic faithful, many of whom are from minority ethnic groups and face ongoing security challenges.
Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja welcomed the announcement, describing it as "a sign of hope and resilience." He noted that despite security challenges including kidnappings and church attacks, the Catholic community in Northern Nigeria continues to grow.
The establishment has drawn mixed reactions. Some Muslim community leaders have expressed concern about religious demographics, while interfaith organizations have welcomed it as an opportunity for dialogue. The Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, issued a statement of congratulations, calling for continued peaceful coexistence.
Security analysts note that the new diocese is located in one of Nigeria most volatile regions, where banditry and insurgent activity have displaced hundreds of thousands. The Catholic Church has been active in providing humanitarian assistance to displaced persons regardless of religious affiliation.
The first Mass in the new diocese is scheduled for Pentecost Sunday, with attendance expected from Catholic leaders across West Africa. Pope Francis is expected to send a video message for the occasion.
