Nnamdi Kanu Health Raises Concerns in Court

Lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu raised fresh concerns about his client deteriorating health during a Federal High Court hearing in Abuja, requesting independent medical examination.

Fresh concerns about Nnamdi Kanu health were raised during a Federal High Court hearing in Abuja, as his lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, requested an independent medical examination for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ejimakor told the court that Kanu had been denied adequate medical attention for a pre-existing heart condition and that his health had visibly deteriorated during detention. "My client has lost significant weight and is suffering from untreated cardiac issues," Ejimakor stated. "This is a matter of life and death."

The prosecution, led by the Attorney-General office, opposed the request, arguing that Kanu was receiving adequate care at the DSS medical facility. Justice Binta Nyako adjourned the matter for two weeks to allow both parties to submit medical reports.

Kanu, who has been in DSS detention since his extradition from Kenya in 2021, is facing treason charges. His trial has been marked by numerous adjournments and legal disputes. The IPOB leader appeared in court wearing a dark suit and was described by observers as "noticeably frail."

The case has drawn international attention, with the UK government, where Kanu holds citizenship, expressing concern about due process. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has previously called for Kanu immediate release, describing his detention as arbitrary.

Supporters gathered outside the courthouse in large numbers, leading to a heavy security presence. The DSS closed several surrounding streets and deployed anti-riot police. IPOB had declared a sit-at-home order in the Southeast, which saw partial compliance.

Legal analysts note that the health argument could become a significant factor in bail considerations, though previous bail applications have been denied. The adjournment means Kanu will remain in detention for at least another two weeks before the court rules on the medical examination request.
